Happy Friday Tigres,

As we wrap up the month of May (that went fast!) and welcome June, we continue to celebrate our students, both past and present! This week we celebrate our potential future chefs in our Club de Cocina, our brilliant linguistics in the DC Spanish Spelling Bee, our AAPI pride at OA, and our current 3rd graders who will join us at Adams next year. And, we hope to welcome Alums back on campus this June as well!

Congrats to Emil, Lea, Lexie and Tighe for doing an outstanding job representing us at the the DC Spanish Spelling Bee sponsored by DC Bilingual Public Charter School! Our kids competed against some of the most dedicated Spanish spellers in the city, and did brilliant work. Congrats to Tighe for ranking 3rd in the City, and to all our spellers for the long hours of practice and dedication. It was an absolute pleasure moderating the spelling bee at OA with AP Antunez, and seeing the passion and dedication that our students have for language. Thank you Emil, Lea, Lexie and Tighe for representing us on that stage today!

As we wrap up AAPI Month, we want to showcase a particularly brilliant celebration in the 6th Grade! Thank you to Juan Turcios for coordinating a cultural map series led by students. Sixteen students spent all month planning their sessions, and showcased a variety of traditions from Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan, India, Pakistan, and China. Some students shared their family traditions, and others shared their new learning. It was a brilliant testament to being a haven of immigrant pride at OA!

At the conclusion of Sra. Reza, Sra. Moriconi, Sra. Pardo and Sr. Solano's Cooking Club, we would like to express our heartfelt thanks for their brilliance and passion for sharing culture with our students. Over 7 sessions, our students explored new recipes, tried different ingredients (even green things!), and built confidence in the kitchen learning Latin and international foods. Our kids made everything from arepas to sushi--and it was delicious. The crew shared creativity, teamwork, and meaningful moments with several faculty members who taught their favorite dishes. Thank you club sponsors for making this possible!

And finally, a major shout out to AP Antunez, AP Berrocal, and the 4th Grade Team for organizing a "get to know Adams" day for our students and families as they make this significant transition. We got great feedback from families about getting to experience this shift before the Summer and meeting their brilliant new team in the evening session. AP Antunez will be sending out slides and the FAQ's from the evening session with families shortly. Be on the lookout for that info in your inboxes!

• June 4th: Move up Day for Families going from 5th to 6th @ Adams! Families are invited to join us for an informational session at 5pm at Adams. We will also invite current 6th grade parents to help answer any questions you might have!

• June 12th: Field Day at Oyster and for 6th/7th at Adams
• June 12th: 5th Grade Promotion Ceremony at Adams @ 2pm​
