Tiger's Den Vol 36 - Letter

Happy Festival de Poesía Week!

Of all our traditions here at OA, this was one of the most moving! At the Adams Festival, we listened to poems about social justice, climate change, and our duty to the land, the immigrant experience in this country, and the effects of social media. I saw the compassion and collective responsibility that our students demonstrated in their bilingual art. That’s why I left the event truly grateful to ALL our Spanish teachers at Adams for fostering that capacity for expression, ethical commitment to our community, and organizing the event together to give them a platform for their talents.

At Oyster we read original poems about our love for our school, our grandmothers, and our homes. At both festivals, we read and celebrated poems from our Latin American tradition, and even read poems from two of my favorite poets, Gabriela Mistral and Alma Flor Ada! As Pablo Neruda said, it was an "Ode to Things," simple yet so impactful. I felt tremendous pride in being the school that is generating a new era of bilingual, bicultural poets, who carry and represent our traditions without fear of the challenges they will face in the coming years. Thank you to Ms. Gracia and Mr. Solano for organizing the event!

Here I share videos of some of the most applauded poems of the day. Enjoy!

Oyster-Adams at the Millennium Stage

This week we also celebrated the incredible participation of our students at the Kennedy Center! The third-grade choir and the Adams musical represented OA on the Millennium Stage with great pride and talent. They had the opportunity to visit the behind-the-scenes areas, shine on the Millennium stage, and sing their hearts out en españolThank you to Dr. Cruz, Mr. Salvador, and Ms. Alfaro for nurturing their musical genius. Families were proud of their children and our belonging to the OA community!

Our Families vs. Teachers Game

And finally, I share with you that the faculty won the soccer game (9 to 3) after the terrible basketball defeat during La Fiesta! Congrats to faculty for a hard-earned win! In the fall, I'd love to open with a volleyball game in our new gym at Adams...

Un abrazo,

Carolina Brito, Principal of Oyster-Adams
