Tiger's Den Vol 19 - Letter
Good evening OA Tigers,
Welcome back from a week of unexpected snow days! This week's newsletter celebrates our brilliant students at Adams, solidarity with our undocumented families, and the incredible family volunteers that make our community possible.
After an extended winter break, students at the Adams campus jumped right back into learning. In 8th-grade Spanish and English classes, students explored technological history connected to their unit’s essential question: "How does a society balance freedom and security?" Next week, they'll be discussing whether the Supreme Court should ban TikTok. In 6th-grade Spanish, students are learning about the Bracero Program to deepen their understanding of how migration impacts the lives of people and society. And in 5th-grade English students are learning vocabulary related to their unit on the United States' westward expansion in the 1800s. In several classes, students are also bravely participating in Spelling Bees, crossing their fingers in hopes of making it to the school-wide competition on January 22. Good luck, Tigres!
This Friday, Amica held an impressive "Know Your Rights" session for undocumented community members and their allies. We had families from Oyster-Adams present, and several community members who attended as allies. Over 7 OA families volunteered to do childcare for parents attending the workshop, making it possible for our participants to be fully present and engaged. In addition to OA families, 8 other schools were invited to the session, allowing us to share this incredible resource with our Latino community across the city. We're a history-making school in this country, let's continue carrying that torch by standing in solidarity with the people who will need us most these coming years. Thank you to every single one of you who gave your time to make this experience possible, and who model what it means to embrace all of our Tigres.
Finally, a massive shout-out to this incredible snow-shoveling crew who cleared our field and playground at Oyster! Once the weather warms up, you will make it possible for our little ones to run out and PLAY! In the words of Bad Bunny's new anti-colonial album, "¡deBí TiRAR MáS FOTos!"

Su directora,
Carolina Brito
