I hope everyone is having a wonderful week and that the spring weather will be returning next week. I am super excited to share that about 25 7th grade students will be traveling to Granada, Spain as part of an educational exchange on Tuesday. Please join me in wishing our students a safe trip, incredible experiences and an equally safe return. I will be personally traveling with the students to Granada and am grateful to be able to share this experience with them. During my absence I will be checking my email but will not have internet access all the time so if you have an immediate emergency or urgent question, please contact AP Hawkins for items related to grades 6-8, AP Morado for items in Grades 4 and 5, and AP Berrocal for items involving Grades Pre-K4 through 3.

On April 8th, the DC metro area will be experiencing an incredible phenomenon. We will be one of many cities in the northeastern part of the US that will be able to view a lunar eclipse. It will be visible in our area between 2:04 and 4:32 PM, with 87% coverage at 3:20 p.m. Eclipses are cool but can also pose some health risks to the eyes if light reaches the eyes without proper protection. Oyster-Adams will be providing all children with eclipse viewing glasses that will be theirs to keep. To ensure that students can view the eclipse, we will dismiss them on Monday, April 8th at 3:00 pm. Families picking up their child are welcome to join and us at 3:00 pm and enjoy this experience with their child.

This past week our 8th graders attended a DCPS sponsored field trip with Mr. Itarte. Our students participated in a bouldering course and had a great time. Mr. Itarte was kind enough to share some photos of the students participating in the activities and from the looks of it they had a wonderful time. If your child participated in the tip, please reach out to him so he can provide any photos he might have of your child.

This past week the school’s Instructional Leadership Team participated in a middle of the year data step back. The purpose of this excercise was to measure our progress towards our academic goals that were created over this past summer. The academic goal for this school year is to narrow the opportunity, racial, and linguistic gap that exist in our academic achievement across the content areas of Spanish language arts, English language arts and Math. As a result of our investigations, I am proud to announce that we are either on track to meet or have met our goal of reducing the gap by at least 3% for this school year.

On April 1st our 4th graders will be traveling to Philly and will be having their first overnight school trip with Oyster-Adams. They will be visiting the liberty bell and other wonderful sites related to the American Revolution. We wish them a safe trip and return. Thanks to all the parent volunteers and staff who are traveling with the students and have made this trip possible.

In my previous communication I shared that Oyster-Adams was applying to enter teams into the DC Math competition taking place later this Spring. The committee selecting schools to compete in the competition have indicated that we have been selected to participate in the Middle School level of the competition. Ms. Mazier, Mr. Carrasco, and Mrs. Rodriguez are the teachers who volunteered to prepare and coach the students for this competition. Thanks for making this possible.
