Newsletter - February 15th

I would like to wish everyone a wonderful long weekend. Hoping everyone had a wonderful Valentine's Day.  Below please find some updates from this past week.

This past weekend Ms. Ferris took her math club students to a Math Counts Chapter competition at St. Anselm.  Our students competed against some of the top Math teams in DC and we were only one of two public schools in the competition.    Our students did a great job, especially since this was the first time, they had had the opportunity to participate in this type of competition.  I would like to also shout out to Emilia Diez’s parents (Marilia and Esteban) who were our MVPs (Most Valuable Parents) for this event.   The family went out and purchased snacks for our students and found graphic calculators for the students when it was realized that they would be a le to use them in the competition.  Thanks, Ms. Ferris, for providing this opportunity for our students and I look forward to winning next year.

Come by Nando's in Woodley Park for dinner on Tuesday, Feb. 27 from 4-8 pm to support the end of year 8th grade activities, including the Costa Rica/NY/DC trips and graduation. Present the flyer on your phone or printed to ensure your purchase counts towards this Oyster Adams fundraising event. Flyer

Please join our 6th grade team as they fundraise for their end of the year camping trip. They are hosting a kid’s night out at the Line hotel in Adams Morgan with dinner and fun activities included. Please use this link for more info and to register for the event.

School budget season is upon us.  I have been working on the school budget this past week with the admin team's help.  I am also grateful for the staff and community’s input provided via the LSAT budget survey.  School Year 24-25 budget added about $1.2 million dollars to our budget when compared to the current budget.  Unfortunately, even though we have had an increase in our budget we are facing less buying power.  All staff have had new contracts ratified in the past year and everything is more expensive than it was a year ago.  The increase in the budget does not cover the difference in costs from this year to next.  As a result, we are facing a budget shortfall of approximately $550,000.  We will continue to work with the school finance team to create a budget that has the least number of changes in our instructional program.

Please find the calendar for Term 3 in this LINK.  Here you will find most of the upcoming dates for the rest of this term.  I hope this helps in planning out the remainder of this term.  This calendar will also be available on the school’s website. Thank you, OCC, for suggesting the creation of this calendar. We will be preparing the Term 4 calendar and releasing it in the coming months.

Finally, wanted to welcome Mr. Duglas Ramirez Sorto to the Adams custodial team. He will be working with us to make our school a beautiful and welcoming space for our students. If you see him in your room or in passing, please join me in welcoming him to the community.

Wishing you all a great rest of the week.
