OCC Message

Welcome to the 2023-2024 school year! We are thrilled to be back together, greeting friends old and new (in school buildings both familiar and new-to-us)! Please read below for the inside scoop on what you need to know - it takes all of us working together to make the school a better place. We'll send periodic communications to make sure you know what's happening, and of course you'll also get information from the Principal and your teachers. Check out our new website to find what you need (in English and Spanish!)

Who are we? The Oyster-Adams Community Council (OCC) is a group of elected volunteer parents partnered with school staff and teachers working together on behalf of the school community. The OCC supports Oyster-Adams by hosting events that foster community and build school spirit; keeping you up to date on school news and events; and raising funds for critical resources that help make our unique bilingual model successful. Learn more about us and check out some of the things we did last year.

What you need to know:

  • Bike to School Fridays. Riding a bike to school builds strong bones and muscles, benefits coordination, balance, and cardiovascular health, and even improves focus during the school day. Join us at Walter Pierce Park at 8:10am - one group will ride to Oyster and another group can ride to Adams (if you're interested in biking to Adams, let [email protected] know). More info here.

  • Volunteer. We have several opportunities to volunteer, from signing up to assist your individual classroom as a Room Parent to joining us in OCC.

    • Room Parents are a great way to get involved in your child’s classroom, help teachers, and build our school community. Contact [email protected]  if you’d like to volunteer.

    • Are you available to translate English/Spanish? Contact [email protected] if you’d like to volunteer.

    • Want to get involved with the OCC? Contact [email protected] if you’d like to volunteer.

  • Annual Family Contribution.

    • The OCC will be requesting that each family contribute $450 per enrolled student to cover both the supplies and all of the other additional ways we help the school--from bilingual books, tutoring, and electronic learning apps, to supplemental Science Technology Engineering Art & Math (STEAM) programming, and more. You’ll get more information in the coming weeks from us on how to contribute!

    • The OCC is a nonprofit corporation under DC law and has historically been recognized by the IRS as a 501(c)(3) public charity.

    • Recently, OCC leadership discovered that OCC had fallen out of compliance by failing to file required information returns. As a result, OCC is currently working with its tax advisors to retroactively reinstate its 501(c)(3) status through a program at the IRS designed to help organizations come back into compliance.

    • Accordingly, OCC is not soliciting for contributions until this situation is rectified. We anticipate that it will take a few more weeks until we begin fundraising.

    • We appreciate your patience since our annual family contribution campaign is delayed, and your support as we work through these issues!

  • Stay Informed.

  • Events. More to come - but check out the calendar.
