I hope everyone is doing well. Reminder that this weekend is a three-day weekend and there is no school for students on Monday. We are now officially in the last month of school. With the end of the school year comes many activities and moving pieces and a short time to complete all the tasks required to make those things happen. 8th graders are leaving to Costa Rica on Monday evening, and we are all wishing them a great experience on their trip as well as safe travels. Thanks again to the 8th grade team for making this trip possible as well as the parents/families of our 8th graders for having the faith in us to take your children to Costa Rica.
Last Friday we sent to 4th graders and two 8th graders to compete at the Citywide Spanish Spelling Bee @ DC Bilingual. Our students did a wonderful job at the competition. We are so proud of Emil Armada, Eliz Smitz, Coco Lee and Manuela Andrade Mosquera for their brilliance.
Tonight, we are sending a team of Middle School students to Google Headquarters to compete in the DCPS MS Math Competition. We wish our students luck and positive vibes. DCPS will be live streaming the awards ceremony at 6:50 pm. The link to the awards ceremony is: meet.google.com/eqc-cnxn-uai
Four of our 7th grade students were selected as winners of the Kiwanis International competition to write a children's book about a mental health issue. Please join me in celebrating Ada Jackson, Aenara Rodriguez Black, Milan Markowski, and Emilia Dietz on this wonderful accomplishment. Kiwanis will be hosting a lunch at Meyer on June 10th for the winners and a few guests. Below are the covers of their books.
Festival de Poesia at the Oyster campus was fabulous last Friday. All the students did a great job either reading their original poems or reciting poems by other poets. We are hosting the MS Festival today and the upper elementary festival is tomorrow at Meyers campus. The winners from the Oyster Adams Festival de Poesia will be visiting Planet Word on May 28th as part of the Language Learning Festival hosted by DCPS.
This week we have had several students nominated for the Global Competency Award by DCPS Global education department. Congratulations to Tessa Gauchat, Elijah Fields, and Maeve Newman as well as their families for this accomplishment.
I wanted to take a moment to mention the outstanding performance that took place this past weekend at Cardozo. Our Tigers put on our annual musical there and performed Highschool Musical Jr. at the theatre @ Cardozo HS. The performance was a huge success, and we are so proud of the work our students put in to prepare for the show and commitment they took on as they stayed and practiced after school for many hours. Huge thanks to the families who supported the show and the time they put in to make this show such a great success.
Also, I wanted to make a correction to last week’s communication. The spelling of Mr. WIlliams name does not have an “e” at the end, so the correct spelling is Earl Williams, and he was not the first African American Male to complete the Oyster Program from K-6th, but he was the first African American student to do so. I do sincerely apologize for the misrepresentation Mr. Wiliams.
