Letter from music teacher

I cordially greet you hoping that you are having an excellent start to 2026. I would like to inform you that I have started my unit on “Music in Black History”. I will begin by talking about the evolution of music from Africa to America till today. Examples: African folk songs, work songs, black spirituals, gospel, blues, jazz, rap, etc.

The essential question for this unit is: How can we use music to convey a message when words and actions fail?

The songs to be learned are as follows:
Prek: Cheche Kule, When the saints go marching in.
Kinder: Jambo Bwana, Down by the Riverside
1st: Shosholoza Blues in A major
2nd: We shall overcome, lift every voice and sing (only first two verses)
3rd: If I Ain’t got you, This girl is on fire.

If you have any problem with your child singing these songs because it goes against your culture or religious beliefs, please contact me as soon as possible at manuel.hernandez2@k12.dc.gov

Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns. Please see the concert details below.

Sincerely: Your music teacher,

Sr. Salvador
