OA will continue virtual for the launch of term 2 while DCPS and city senior leadership negotiate staffing. DCPS hopes to begin opening CARES classrooms in a phased approach through term 2. If your family previously accepted an in-person seat, you will now have a chance to accept or decline a CARES seat, a member of our front office staff will reach out to you.
OA is working hard to prepare our school buildings
Last week we completed our building walkthrough with community stakeholders from Mary Cheh’s office, LSAT, OCC and WTU. You can also find our HVAC results here. Below is an overview of of each groups’ visit and comments:
- LSAT Representative: I was extremely impressed with the careful and comprehensive planning Principal Cruz, DSL Han, the custodial staff, and the rest of the OA team have done to prepare both buildings as best they can for whatever in-person programming begins. I think families and students participating in the programs will find a lot of comfort in seeing how much physical distance the different classes will have from each other, including at drop off and pick up, navigating the building, and using the restrooms and other facilities. The most reassuring part of the tours was definitely the briefing about the HVAC systems. We are lucky to have the type of systems we have in both buildings that bring in fresh air and don’t circulate air from room-to-room. With additional air scrubbing from portable HEPA filter units, the air plan really impressed me compared to what I was expecting. Everyone will of course draw their own conclusions about the levels of risk involved with in-person programs, but from the perspective of touring the school’s preparation, I was really satisfied. (Note, though, that as of our tour, there were still more things on the list that needed to get done. My statement here assumes those will be completed before any in-person programming begins.)
- OCC Representative: I toured the Oyster and Adams campuses and was able to see a few classrooms set up for distance learning and CARES. I was very impressed, and surprised, at the upgrades to the HVAC units at both campuses which include new central HVAC systems as well as free-standing HEPA filters in each classroom. These systems pull in fresh air from outside and do not share air between classrooms. In addition, a DC Central Office engineer informed us that the HVAC units in the schools interact with a central Building Management software system so that if the system malfunctions, engineers can start the triaging and managing the system immediately. We also were able to learn more about the protocols for entering the building, isolation (as needed), and the protocols for cleaning and sanitizing high traffic areas. From my perspective, as a parent of two children, I was pleasantly surprised and very impressed with the preparedness of the two campuses. There were several items that still needed to be finished, we were assured those items would be complete before students are permitted on-site.
- WTU Building Representative: The walkthrough of both campuses in their entirety helped to relieve some anxiety at this time. We saw buildings prepared with most items requested on the WTU checklist. Mrs. Han, office staff and custodians prepared the schools as best they could. I saw signage on walls/bulletin boards, but I wonder if it would be possible to have signage on fixtures that could stand in the hallway. Sometimes bulletin boards can blend into the environment. I was encouraged to learn about the HVAC systems and HEPA filters from an experienced professional from central office. He was able to show the team different types of filters, explained how often they should be changed and how to maximize their usage. I would like communicator masks ordered especially to support students with specific learning needs. I wonder if proof will be provided to confirm custodians have been trained to implement enhanced deep cleaning protocols.
Short Survey For Feedback about Term 1
In an effort for continuous improvement, we have prepared a short family survey for Term 1 feedback. This survey is to give us internal feedback on our first 9 weeks of Dual Language Distance Learning. This feedback will be shared directly with your teacher grade level teams, so please fill one survey per child. You can access the survey here. Students in grades 3-8 will also complete a student survey, it will be facilitated by their teacher team during live instruction.

- Representante del edificio de WTU: El recorrido de ambos planteles en su totalidad ayudó a aliviar algo de ansiedad en este momento. Vimos los edificios preparados con la mayoría de los elementos solicitados en la lista de verificación de WTU. La Sra. Han, el personal de la oficina y los conserjes prepararon las escuelas lo mejor que pudieron. Vi letreros en las paredes / tablones de anuncios, pero me pregunto si sería posible tener letreros en accesorios que pudieran colocarse en el pasillo. A veces, los tableros de anuncios pueden mezclarse con el medio ambiente. Me animó aprender sobre los sistemas HVAC y los filtros HEPA de un profesional experimentado de la oficina central. Esta breve encuesta es para darnos comentarios sobre nuestras primeras 9 semanas de aprendizaje a distancia en dos idiomas, durante el término 1. Estos comentarios se compartirán directamente con los equipo de maestros del nivel de grado de su hijo, así que complete una encuesta por niño. Puede acceder a la encuesta aquí.
