Dear Oyster Adams Families,
I hope you are safe and well, I am writing with a brief update on DCPS’s plan to Re-Open OA in term 2. We learned yesterday at Mayor Bowser’s Situational Update on schools that the Mayor and Chancellor are moving ahead with ReOpening Strong for Term 2 in small groups for grades PK4-5th.
This email is about in-person learning, NOT about CARE classrooms. CARE classrooms are described at the end of this post.
The Student Selection Lottery results are being released soon for IN-PERSON learning. 75 OA children will receive an offer for an in-person seat. DCPS selected students based on specific preferences (ex: homeless/living in shelters, students with special needs, students considered at risk and English Language Learners). If your child is one of the 75 students selected for in-person learning, you can expect an email from DCPS Central Office.
If you plan to decline the offer:
You will be able to do so through a link in the email. If you are inclined to decline your student’s spot, we encourage you to do this as soon as possible – as there are students who meet the criteria (ex: homeless/living in shelters, students with special needs, students considered at risk and English Language Learners) who were not selected for in-person learning and are on a waitlist. Unlike the myschooldc lottery, waitlist numbers will not be public to families.
If you wish to accept the spot, you can do two things:
- 1. Grades PK-3rd: Send email (myrna.viera@k12.dc.gov ). Grades 4-5: Send email (susan.oviedo@k12.dc.gov ) OR
- Wait for a call from an OA staff member starting Monday, October 26 to verbally accept the offer. Once the call is made, each family has 48 hours to accept the in-seat offer.
Each DCPS school has unique challenges with space and human resources which means the number and options for in-person learning and support may differ between facilities. Our preliminary plan is that grades PK-2 will be at Oyster and grades 3-5 will be at Adams. Below I will answer a few question that I assume will come to mind:
Who will be my child’s teacher?
Due to the Public Employee Relations Board ruling, principals are unable to discuss staffing and any potential teacher or class shifts at this time as DCPS and WTU are currently in negotiations.
Will my child have a new teacher (different than that from distance learning)?
Your child may have a new teacher they do not currently have.
How long do I have to accept the seat (if given)?
You have 48 hours after an OA staff member calls. If we cannot get ahold of you, the seat will be declined on the 5th day.
Can I find out what other students will be in the in person class?
No, you will need to accept the in-person seat without a class cohort list, we cannot share who else is being offered and the day’s schedule is still to be determined.
How many students will be in each in-person classroom?
At OA, the preliminary plan is to offer one classroom of in-person learning for PK4 through Grade 5.
- PK4 and K will have ten students and one teacher and one instructional aide.
- Grades 1-5 will have 11 students and one teacher.
At OA we are accustomed to having more than one designated teacher to meet our dual language model. How will this work with the in-person model?
DCPS’ re-open strong model allows for only 1 in-person teacher per grade. This could mean that even while in-person, students may log in to TEAMS to receive the instruction in which the assigned in-person teacher may not speak.
I was not offered a seat, is there anything I can do?
If you are not offered a seat, there is no action you can take to “increase” your chances, the waitlist is also managed by the central office. The distance learning model and schedule will remain the same.
How does this impact distance learning?
If you do not receive an in-person offer, your distance learning student may experience a change in their teaching team and in the size of their cohort. If I have questions about the selection process, who can I contact? Per the Chancellor’s email, if you have questions about the student selection process, please do not hesitate to email: dcps.planning@k12.dc.gov.
Our goal is to create the best learning environment possible as we reopen for in person learning, prioritizing safety and equity. At this time, work in our facility is still underway to ensure the HVAC will meet the agreed upon safety standards.
When I receive our HVAC report from DCPS/DGS, I will share it with our school community. DCPS is also scheduling walkthroughs of each school where the principal will accompany representatives from the LSAT, OCC, WTU and central office to ensure both buildings pass the requirements that the mayor listed today.
If you have not seen the mayor’s press conferences since yesterday, you should read here or watch it on social media. Please note that principals are receiving information at the same rate as the general public. I too have many questions, as answers become more clear, I will forward them to our community.

I am offering virtual parent meetings for families who were offered in-person seats on the following dates/times and also welcome your questions in the meantime.

CARE classrooms is a separate instructional model designed by DCPS. Information about CARE classes (ex: grades being offered at OA, staffing and schedule) is forthcoming. CARE stands for “Canvas Academics and Real Engagement.” In these small-group classrooms, students will have supervised care for the school day from a caring adult who is not their teacher. Students will have the benefit of being with their peers at school but will participate in lessons virtually on a computer.

Estimadas familias de Oyster Adams, Espero que esté sano y salvo, le escribo con una breve actualización sobre el plan de DCPS para la reapertura de Oyster-Adamas para el término escolar 2. ¿Cómo afecta esto a la educación a distancia? Si no recibe una oferta para un asiento en persona, su estudiante de educación a distancia puede experimentar un cambio en su equipo de enseñanza y en el tamaño de su clase

Nuestro objetivo es crear el mejor entorno de aprendizaje posible a medida que abremos para el aprendizaje en persona, dando prioridad a la seguridad y la equidad. En este momento, el trabajo en nuestras instalaciones aún está en marcha para garantizar que el HVAC cumpla con los estándares de seguridad acordados.

You have inevitably heard the Mayor’s announcement on the DCPS school re-opening plan by now. DCPS just sent an email blast out to all families and I highly encourage you to read the communication carefully. Please note that this will only affect PK-5th grade, the chancellor announced that middle school and high school will remain virtual through term 2 (Jan. 26th).
