Adams Modernization Update / Actualización de la Modernización de Adams

Adams will be renovated beginning next school year. Please read the information below, review the relevant slides, and submit your feedback through this form by Sunday, May 7.

Background

• Renovation. The Adams Campus will be renovated beginning in the fall of 2023 through spring 2025. This is our planning year. Beginning in the fall 2023, the Adams Campus will relocate to Meyer Elementary, located at 2501 11th Street NW. The renovation will be complete by the start of the 2025 school year.
• School Improvement Team. The School Improvement Team, or SIT, is an advisory group that provides insights to District officials and shares information to the school community. 
• Busses. Busses will run from both the Oyster Campus and the Adams Campus to the Meyer building. There will be 8 buses in total running from the two campuses. The DC Department of General Services will establish a protected location away from construction supervised by school staff. Children are registered as they enter and exit the bus. Parents must be on time; buses cannot wait. Further logistics will be coordinated through the school.
• Feedback. In March, the architecture firm StudioMB collected data about the culture of Oyster-Adams through a variety of mechanisms (slides 11-25). The SIT welcomes additional feedback on these designs using this form. Principal Pineda also sent an email on May 2 with more information.

Status (reference: Slides)

• Significant Improvements. The modernization will increase the number of classrooms to 28 classrooms (currently, we have 19 working classrooms). The new space will also include technology labs, a visual arts space including a kiln, a performing arts classroom, a bigger cafeteria, and a discovery commons activity area that will constitute the “heart of the school.”
• Effectively Utilize Existing Space. The architects are focused on maximizing the existing footprint of the school. They will use the basement, as well as the attic that has 20 foot ceilings and open skylights. The rooftops will meet environmental requirements for stormwater runoff (i.e. akin to green roofs).
• Build Over Soccer Field. All three design concepts include building a new structure over the existing soccer field and condensing playground space. Members of the SIT registered significant concerns regarding the elimination of the soccer field and track. DCPS referenced two vertical play structures. DCPS does not allow construction projects to include underground parking and current plans show 22 parking spaces.
• ADA-Compliant and Accessible Entrance. The building will be ADA-compliant and they will build an accessible entrance on the left between the historic wall and Hilton.
• Historic Building. The architects must fit required design elements (“education specifications” found on slide 40) within a historic building. The retaining wall, facade and columns, lobby, wide hallways, tile floor, auditorium, and the four trees in front of the school will remain intact. The building cannot be popped up, but the attic will be better utilized. The current windows will be used since they have been replaced recently, portions of the HVAC will be retained since that system is new, and all water issues will be fixed. 
• Three Design Concepts. The architects presented three modernization concepts (slide 42):
  • 1. The Stacks (slides 43-45): This concept builds a new entry pavilion next to the Hilton that is 2.5 stories high. It holds the library, a welcome center, and security. Students move through the library as they enter or exit the school. The gym is built on top of the soccer field and the current gym-auditorium becomes a cafeteria-auditorium. School administration raised concerns about multiple entrances (front doors are also used) and library acoustics and disruptions.
  • 2. The Cafe (slides 46-49): This concept builds a cafeteria on top of the soccer field and keeps the gym-auditorium intact. The library is moved to the center attic and a smaller accessible entrance is built by the Hilton.
  • 3. The Court (slides 50-51): This concept builds a gym on top of the soccer field and the current gym-auditorium becomes a cafeteria-auditorium. The library is moved to the center attic and a smaller accessible entrance is built by the Hilton.

Next Steps

• Please provide your feedback using this form by Sunday, May 7. Principal Pineda will share with the District and the architects on Monday, May 8.
• On Monday, May 15 from 5:30-6:30pm, Principal Pineda will host an Oyster-Adams Townhall on the Adams Modernization in English with simultaneous translation in Spanish in the form of closed captioning. 
• The SIT will continue to raise that this project must reflect our inclusive community of learners who are bilingual and bi-literate in Spanish and English.

• Autobuses. Los autobuses correrán desde ambos planteles en Oyster y Adams hasta el edificio Meyer. Habrá 8 autobuses en total saliendo de los dos planteles. El Departamento de Servicios Generales de DC establecerá un lugar protegido lejos de la construcción supervisado por el personal de la escuela. Los estudiantes serán registrados cuando entran y salen del autobús. Los padres deben llegar a tiempo; los autobuses no pueden esperar. La logística adicional se coordinará a través de la escuela.
• Comentario. En marzo, la firma de arquitectura StudioMB recopiló datos sobre la cultura de Oyster-Adams a través de una variedad de mecanismos (diapositivas 11-25). El SIT agradece comentarios adicionales sobre estos diseños utilizando este formulario. El director Pineda también envió un correo electrónico el 2 de mayo con más información.

Estado actual (diapositivas)

• Tres conceptos de diseño. Los arquitectos presentaron tres conceptos de modernización (diapositiva 42):
  • 1. The Stacks (diapositivas 43-45): este concepto construye un nuevo pabellón de entrada al lado del Hilton que tiene 2.5 pisos de altura. Tiene la biblioteca, un centro de bienvenida, y seguridad. Los estudiantes pasan por la biblioteca al entrar o salir de la escuela. El gimnasio se construye sobre la cancha de fútbol y el actual gimnasio-auditorio se convierte en cafetería-auditorio. La administración de la escuela expresó su preocupación por las entradas múltiples (también se usan las puertas delanteras) y la acústica e interrupciones de la biblioteca.
  • 2. El Café (diapositivas 46-49): Este concepto construye una cafetería encima de la cancha de fútbol y mantiene intacto el gimnasio-auditorio. La biblioteca se traslada al ático central y el Hilton construye una entrada accesible más pequeña.
  • 3. La Cancha (diapositivas 50-51): Este concepto construye un gimnasio sobre la cancha de fútbol y el gimnasio-auditorio actual se convierte en cafetería-auditorio. La biblioteca se traslada al ático central y el Hilton construye una entrada accesible más pequeña.

Próximos pasos

• Envíe sus comentarios utilizando este formulario antes del domingo, 7 de mayo. El director Pineda lo compartirá con el distrito y los arquitectos el lunes, 8 de mayo.
• El lunes, 15 de mayo de 5:30 p. m. a 6:30 p. m., el director Pineda organizará una asamblea pública de Oyster-Adams sobre la modernización de Adams en inglés con traducción simultánea al español en forma de subtítulos.
• El SIT seguirá planteando que este proyecto debe reflejar nuestra comunidad inclusiva de estudiantes bilingües y bialfabetizados en español e inglés.
