It was great to see many of you at Fiesta on Saturday. We want to thank Carla Ferris, Cristina Regojo and Catherine Depret, and the many, many other volunteers for organizing this amazing community event. We’d also like to thank all parents who attended and helped us build a stronger sense of community.

Jewish American Heritage Month (JAHM)
We’d like to invite the OA community to join us in celebrating and acknowledging JAHM. May was first proclaimed as Jewish American Heritage Month in 2006. I invite you to learn more about Jewish heritage and their contributions to our nation. The following links provide additional information from the White House and from the Jewish American Committee.
National School Nurse Day
May 10 is National School Nurse Day. Please take a few minutes to say thank you to Nurse Andrea Fraser at the Oyster campus and Nurse Serge Saa-Lapnet at the Adams campus. We appreciate their critical role in addressing our students’ health and safety needs.
Oyster Adams is an Inclusive and Diverse Community
As a school family, we aspire to become a more inclusive community. We’ll intentionally start changing our communication style to recognize students and staff who identify as gender non-confirming individuals. Language plays a pivotal role in being a more inclusive community. We culturally and linguistically speak and write from a dichotomous perspective around gender and sexual orientation. In Spanish, for example, most of the adjectives, articles, nouns, and pronouns are gender-based (female or male). We’ve been taught and have experienced that we must use the male connotation by default. For examples when we talk about children, we just say “los niños.”
We will pay close attention to the pronouns that students and staff use. If you want to read more about why pronouns matter, take a few minutes to read this.
I invite you to be aware of what, how, and why we use those words in Spanish and the type of pronouns we use.
OA Middle School Musical Showcase
Come see OA Middle School students explore their cultures and identities. This show is unique to the students of OA as they share their experiences through song, monologue and dance. Don’t miss a chance to learn more about our wonderful community while enjoying the many talents of our students!
- When: Friday, May 19th at 6:30 PM and Saturday, May 20th at 6:00 PM
- Where: Adams Gym, 2020 19th Street, NW
Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for adults.
Announcements and Reminders
- To be up to date with the latest information shared with families about the Adams modernization, click here. We continue ecouraging all staff members to provide their feedback through the following form.
- We would like to give a shout out to Dr. Fortson, Evelyn, Susana, Maggie, and Nurse Frasser for their hard work getting school in 100% immunization compliance. We were one of the first schools in the district to achieve this goal. We received an official recognition from DC Health.

- On May 16, we will have an in-person cafecito at 9:00 a.m. at Osyter. On May 15, we’ll host a virtual Town Hall for Adams at 5:30 p.m. Here is the link.
- Please wish our 8th graders good luck taking their AP exam on Wednesday.
- Registration: Once again we want to remind you about the importance of enrolling your students. Here is the link to complete the process, and if they need any kind of support, stop by the school to get in-person support from our staff members at the main office. This weekend I reached 43%.

Mes de la Herencia Judía Americana (JAHM)

Día Nacional de la Enfermera Escolar
El 10 de mayo es el Día Nacional de la Enfermería Escolar. Apreciamos su papel fundamental para abordar las necesidades de salud y seguridad de nuestros estudiantes.
Oyster Adams es una comunidad inclusiva
Como familia escolar, aspiramos a convertirnos en una comunidad más inclusiva. Comenzaremos a cambiar intencionalmente nuestro estilo de comunicación para reconocer a estudiantes y al personal que se identifican como personas de género no confirmado. El idioma juega un papel fundamental en ser una comunidad más inclusiva. Culturalmente y lingüísticamente hablamos y escribimos desde una perspectiva dicotómica en torno al género y la orientación sexual. En español, por ejemplo, la mayoría de los adjetivos, artículos, sustantivos y pronombres están basados en el género (femenino o masculino). Nos han enseñado y hemos experimentado que debemos usar la connotación masculina por defecto. Por ejemplo, cuando hablamos de niños y niñas, simplemente decimos “los niños”.
Prestaremos mucha atención a los pronombres que usan los estudiantes y el personal. Si desean leer más sobre por qué los pronombres son importantes, tómense unos minutos para leer esto.
Les invito a estar al tanto de qué, cómo y por qué usamos esas palabras en español y el tipo de pronombres que usamos.
Espectáculo Musical de la Escuela Intermedia Oyster-Adams
Vengan y vean a l@s estudiantes de la Escuela Intermedia de OA explorar sus culturas e identidades. Este espectáculo es único para estudiantes de OA, ya que comparten sus experiencias a través de canciones, monólogos y danza.
