We hope everyone had a great weekend. As we prepare for a short week before spring break, we want to wish Happy Easter to all families who celebrate.
Please take a few minutes to go over the following information, reflections, and updates. As usual, feel free to reach out if you have any questions or comments.

Create Cultural Experiences
A pivotal part of learning a new language is learning and celebrating the culture of the target language. There are some aspects of the culture that will be visible (music, holidays, food, etc.) and some that will not (values, social norms, etc.). Keeping our minds and hearts open to welcome all cultures without casting any judgment is another pillar of dual language education. As a community, we do not compare cultures to determine which one is better; we simply embrace their uniqueness. Here are a few suggestions to help our tigers continue developing that socio-cultural competence.
- Plan to go to a restaurant that offers authentic food related to your child’s target language. Encourage them to order by having them practice what they plan to say beforehand.
- Take your child to an international event such as Passport DC where families can visit embassies from around the world on May 6. This is part of a month-long festival that happens every year in DC.
- Set up play dates with friends who are dominant in the target language, so they have opportunities to practice outside of school.
- When possible, schedule trips to places where the target language is spoken.
- Encourage your students to read books that tell the history of the countries where Spanish and Mandari are spoken. Create spaces at home to talk about what students are reading at school and ask them: What are you reading? What is it about? What do you think about that story?
- Watch movies that tell us about countries where Mandarin and Spanish are spoken and have conversations about what you see from a cultural perspective.
Announcements and Reminders
- Do not forget to complete the test to return protocol for COVID and enter your results here before 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 23.
- There will not be weekly message next week.
- Do not forget to enroll your student as soon as possible.
- We want to wish a great trip to a group of 7th graders and chaperones on their trip to Spain.
- We will hold a town hall in May for all families to provide an update to the whole community about the modernization of the school and to address any questions and concerns you may have. We will share the date as soon as we align the schedule with the developers (contractors and the architect if they are available), so please stay tuned for that.
- We will also share a form for parents to officially request transportation and give the school accurate data to plan accordingly. We are just giving more time for parents to complete the enrollment of their students for next year.
- We want to thank all the chaperones who helped with the trip to Philadelphia and to the volunteers who helped set up and take down the Oyster STEM showcase.
- Due to the PARCC testing in the Adams campus and spring break, we will not have our regular cafecito at each campus this month.

Crear experiencias culturales
Una parte fundamental del aprendizaje de un nuevo idioma es aprender y celebrar la cultura del idioma de destino. Hay algunos aspectos de la cultura que serán visibles (música, celebraciones, comida, etc.) y otros que no (valores, normas sociales, etc.). Mantener nuestras mentes y corazones abiertos para dar la bienvenida a todas las culturas sin emitir ningún juicio es otro pilar de la educación bilingüe. Como comunidad, no comparamos culturas para determinar cuál es mejor; Simplemente exaltamos su singularidad. Aquí hay algunas sugerencias para ayudar a nuestros tigres a continuar desarrollando esa competencia sociocultural.
- Planeen ir a un restaurante que ofrezca comida auténtica relacionada con el idioma de destino de su hijo/a. Anímelo/as a ordenar pidiéndoles que practiquen lo que planean decir de antemano.
- Lleven a su hijo/a a un evento internacional como Passport DC, donde las familias pueden visitar embajadas de todo el mundo el 6 de mayo. Esto es parte de un festival de un mes de duración que ocurre cada año en DC.
- Establezcan citas de juego con amigo/as que dominen el idioma de destino, para que tengan la oportunidad de practicar fuera de la escuela.
- Cuando sea posible, programen viajes a lugares donde se hable el idioma de destino.
- Animen a sus estudiantes a leer libros que cuenten la historia de los países donde se habla español y mandarín. Creen espacios en casa para hablar sobre lo que lo/as estudiantes están leyendo en la escuela y pregúntenles: ¿Qué estás leyendo? ¿De qué se trata? ¿Qué opinas de esa historia?
- Miren películas o series de televisión que hablen sobre países donde se habla mandarín y español y tengan conversaciones sobre lo que ven desde una perspectiva cultural.
Anuncios y recordatorios
- No olviden completar el protocolo de prueba de COVID para regreso después de las vacaciones e ingresen los resultados de sus estudiantes aquí antes de las 7:00 p.m. del domingo 23 de abril.
- No habrá mensaje semanal la próxima semana.
- No olviden inscribir a tu estudiante lo antes posible.
- Queremos desear un gran viaje a un grupo de estudiantes de 7º grado y a lo/as acompañantes en su viaje a España.
- Vamos a tener una reunión general virtual en mayo para todas las familias para proporcionar una actualización a toda la comunidad sobre la modernización de la escuela y para abordar cualquier pregunta e inquietud que puedan tener. Compartiremos la fecha tan pronto como alineemos el cronograma con los desarrolladores (contratistas y la arquitecta si están disponibles), así que estad atento/as a eso.
- También compartiremos un formulario para que los padres soliciten oficialmente el transporte y le den a la escuela datos precisos para planificar en consecuencia. Solo estamos dando más tiempo para que los padres completen la inscripción de sus hijo/as para el próximo año.
- Queremos agradecer a todos lo/as acompañantes que ayudaron con el viaje a Filadelfia y a lo/as voluntario/as que ayudaron a establecer y desmantelar el showcase de Oyster STEM.
- Debido a las pruebas PARCC en el campus de Adams y las vacaciones de primavera, no tendremos nuestro cafecito regular en cada campus este mes.
