We hope you are having a great weekend. It’s great to see how spring is getting closer and closer every day.

Escuela de Padres – Dual Language Education
We’d like to thank the parents who attended the virtual Escuela de Padres last Monday. If you did not have the opportunity to attend, you can access the presentation here. We’re glad to provide multiple perspectives about how our tigers are developing their multilingual brains from a researcher from the University of Maryland and from specialized staff from both campuses.
Here are the answers to two of the most common questions that we received:
- The acquisition of a second or third language in children is a very natural process. There is a higher level of anxiety among adults about the process than what we experience at school with our tigers.
- As a school, we do not teach Spanglish, but we recognize that form of translanguaging is also natural for bilingual individuals. We tend to use all of our linguistic repertoire to communicate with other bilingual folks. This means that we stay away from shaming the use of the two languages interchangeably.
In the next few weeks, we’ll share some additional resources for families to read and support the language acquisitions of their students.

- This Tuesday, March 21, we will host our monthly LSAT meeting at the Oyster campus from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m.

Escuela de Padres – Educación en Lenguaje Dual
Nos gustaría agradecer a los padres que asistieron a la Escuela de Padres virtual el lunes pasado. Si no tuvieron la oportunidad de asistir, puedes acceder a la presentación aquí. Nos complace proporcionar múltiples perspectivas sobre cómo nuestros tigres están desarrollando sus cerebros multilingües desde la perspectiva de una investigadora de la Universidad de Maryland y de nuestro personal especializado de ambos campus.
Aquí están las respuestas a las dos preguntas más mencionadas:
- La adquisición de un segundo o tercer idioma en lo/as niños es un proceso muy natural. Hay un mayor nivel de ansiedad entre los adultos sobre el proceso que lo que experimentamos en la escuela con nuestros tigres.
- Como escuela, no enseñamos spanglish, pero reconocemos que la forma de translingüismo también es un proceso natural para las personas bilingües. Tendemos a usar todo nuestro repertorio lingüístico para comunicarnos con otras personas bilingües. Esto significa que nos debemos mantener alejado/as de avergonzar el uso de los dos idiomas indistintamente o simultáneamente.
En las próximas semanas, compartiremos algunos recursos adicionales para que las familias lean y apoyen la adquisición del lenguaje de sus estudiantes.
