Black History Legacy Month (BHLM)
The contributions of the Black community to our country and to the world should be celebrated every day of the year! February is only an additional opportunity to pause, acknowledge, and reflect on not only on their struggles, but their contributions and legacy. We have much to celebrate and learn about the achievements, wisdom, and legacy of the Black community.
As a school, we’re still committed to affirming and uplifting the voices of our Black and Brown students, families, and staff. We’ll continue examining and addressing our racial biases and hosting courageous conversations about race, racism, and inequities.
Staff have created a plan at each campus about how to celebrate BHLM. It will be communicated in the grade level newsletters. Also, teachers will share any curricular activities that align to BHLM for you to be informed.
We have discussed in our LSAT meetings and in the cafecitos how to amplify the conversations and reflections we have with staff and students to the rest of the community, primarily to families. We have brainstormed some ideas about facilitating some book studies or bringing an external facilitator to lead the conversations. We’ll share updates as they become available. Also, please let me know if you are in the capacity to lead some of the conversations or if you have any additional ideas, resources, or contacts.
Adams Renovation
We’re glad to share that our first SIT meeting is this Tuesday, and I will share your concerns, comments, and questions with the committee. Here is the form for you to send any additional questions or comments. We will compile the notes and answers into one document, and they will be shared next week.
In the meantime, we want to share that the community has brought awareness to DCPS about the need for two buses or two stops to and from the swing space.
The swing space is currently used by another school, and it is difficult for us to coordinate any school visits, but we will open the doors of the school as soon as it is possible (even during some days in the summer). We will even invite parents to help us get ready for the next school year. We promise to make short video clips or take some pictures as soon as we are allowed to visit the school again.
Finally, some families brought to my attention comments made about the location of the new swing space. It’s unfortunate to hear that some members of our community are not aware of the fact that 50% of the students and more that 90% of staff do not live in the vicinity of our current schools. We have a significant number of families who live near the new swing space. Please be mindful of the impact of your comments.
Escuela de Padres – Conscious Discipline
We are also excited to invite our school community to hear a little more about Conscious Discipline. This time it is not about school, but parents. We are all in this together, giving the best of ourselves for our tigers. We will have this virtual session on 1/31 at 5:00 p.m. (here is the link to join). In this 40-minute presentation we will share some suggestions, tools, and ideas that you could use at home with your students. This presentation will be bilingual and will cover ages 4 through 14. At the end we will have a space for your questions.

Mes del Legado de la Historia Negra (BHLM)
¡Las contribuciones de la comunidad negra a nuestro país y al mundo deben celebrarse todos los días del año! Febrero es solo una oportunidad adicional para hacer una pausa, reconocer y reflexionar no solo sobre sus luchas, sino también sobre sus contribuciones y legado. Tenemos mucho que celebrar y aprender sobre los logros, la sabiduría y el legado de la comunidad negra.
Como escuela, todavía estamos comprometido/as a afirmar y elevar las voces de nuestro/as estudiantes, familias y personal que se identifican como personas de color. Continuaremos examinando y abordando nuestros prejuicios raciales y organizando conversaciones valientes sobre raza, racismo e inequidades.
El personal ha creado un plan en cada campus sobre cómo celebrar BHLM. Todas las actividades se comunicarán en los boletines informativos de nivel de grado. Además, lo/as maestro/as compartirán cualquier actividad curricular que se alinee con BHLM para que ustedes estén informado/as.
Hemos discutido en nuestras reuniones de LSAT y en los cafecitos cómo llevar algunas de las conversaciones y reflexiones que tenemos con el personal y los estudiantes al resto de la comunidad, principalmente a las familias. Renovación Adams
Nos complace compartir que nuestra primera reunión de SIT es este martes, y compartiré sus inquietudes, comentarios y preguntas con el comité. Aquí está el formulario para que envíen cualquier pregunta o comentario adicional. Compilaremos las notas y respuestas en un solo documento, y se compartirán la próxima semana.
Mientras tanto, queremos compartir que la comunidad ha compartido con DCPS sobre la necesidad de dos autobuses o dos paradas hacia y desde el espacio provisional.
El colegio provisional está siendo utilizado actualmente por otro colegio, y nos cuesta coordinar las visitas escolares, pero abriremos las puertas del colegio tan pronto como sea posible (incluso durante algunos días del verano). Incluso invitaremos a los padres a ayudarnos a prepararnos para el próximo año escolar. Prometemos hacer videoclips cortos o tomar algunas fotos tan pronto como se nos permita visitar la escuela nuevamente.
Finalmente, algunas familias compartieron con la escuela los comentarios despectivos hechos sobre la ubicación del nuevo espacio provisional. Es lamentable escuchar que algunos miembros de nuestra comunidad no son conscientes del hecho de que el 50% de los estudiantes y más del 90% del personal no viven en las cercanías de nuestras escuelas actuales. Tenemos un número significativo de familias que viven cerca del nuevo espacio provisional. Por favor, tenga en cuenta el impacto de sus comentarios.
Escuela de Padres – Disciplina Consciente
También nos complace invitar a nuestra comunidad escolar a escuchar un poco más sobre la Disciplina Consciente. Esta vez no se trata de la escuela, sino de los padres. Estamos todo/as junto/as en esto, dando lo mejor de nosotro/as mismos para nuestro/as tigres. Tendremos esta sesión virtual el 31/1 a las 5:00 p.m. (aquí está el enlace para unirse). En esta presentación de 40 minutos compartiremos algunas sugerencias, herramientas e ideas que podría usar en casa con sus estudiantes. Esta presentación será bilingüe y cubrirá las edades de 4 a 14 años. Al final tendremos un espacio para sus preguntas.
