Oyster-Adams Community Council (OCC)
The OCC is the parent-teacher organization at the Oyster-Adams Bilingual School. We do three things to promote and support education at our school:
- Raise money from many sources to provide critical resources for our unique mission that are not included in the DCPS budget
- Organize volunteers, expertise, family-driven initiatives (Science, Environment, Language Learning)
- Subsidize and manage enrichment programs , field trips, tutoring, and family-friendly community events
The OCC’s budget is separate from the DCPS budget. The OCC Board meets monthly, and also convenes community meetings typically every other month. All meetings are open.

Oyster-Adams Consejo de la Comunidad (OCC)
La OCC es la organización de padres y maestros en la Escuela Bilingüe Oyster-Adams. Hacemos tres cosas para promover y apoyar la educación en nuestra escuela:

OCC Leadership and Officer Positions
Co-Chair (English): Serves as principal executive officer of the organization. Supervises and controls activities of the organization. Presides and participates in all executive and membership meetings.
Co-Presidente (Español): Sirve como principal funcionario ejecutivo de la organización. Supervisa y controla las actividades de la organización. Preside y participa en todas las reuniones ejecutivas y de membresía.
Co-Vice Chair (English): Acts as aide to the Co-Chairs and performs the Co-Chairs duties in the absence or inability of the Co-Chairs. Performs other delegated duties as assigned. Acts as the parent liaison to the Oyster-Adams community.

OCC Revised Budget 2009-2010
The Board has been faced with a series of unexpected expenses this year. Some are bills from last year that were neglected to be submitted in a timely fashion that we are agreeing to honor, some are old funds from several years prior that had been unintentionally dropped from the budget, one is a penalty from the IRS that we are actively appealing. The details are contained within the minutes of the meetings. To keep our community fully informed, this spreadsheet illustrates how we have reallocated expenses for SY2009-2010. In order to mitigate the effect of these unexpected expenses on the OCC budget, some of the planned expenses are being covered by the Principal as part of her DCPS budget. We have also engaged legal counsel who are helping us pro bono.
On the bright side, the school has been the recipient of several grants this year that will fund activities above what was proposed to be supported by the OCC: a $9,700 arts grant obtained from the Minneapolis Foundation; a $1,500 literary grant from the Weatherspoon Charitable Foundation; a $5,000.00 grant from National Restaurant Association for special education; a $5,000 grant from ING Foundation for VAMOS; a $2,500 grant from State Farm for the Advisory Project at the middle school; and a $5,000 Chesapeake Bay Trust that helped support the Echo Hill field trip.
We are working as diligently as possible to be good stewards of the parents’ money. Please be patient with us during this difficult time. Thank you.

Hello Oyster-Adams community!
Thank you so much for the grant to purchase the MP3 players. We have used the players to load audio books to help struggling readers develop fluency. Some students have begun to use them on a regular basis. Others use the players to aid them with particular reading assignments. Although there are many pieces to the reading puzzle, these players along with the success of the Read 180 program have contributed to some students making gains of up to two grade levels in these first six months of the school year. It has been a great pleasure for me to report this progress to our students and their parents and it wouldn’t have been possible without your support.
The players were a considerable investment at $50 each, but they are of good quality and allow students to listen to a multitude of audio books. I have shared the players with my fifth grade colleagues; Anne Brainard and Julia Hainer were appreciative to have the technology available. Even the librarian, Leslie Smith, was impressed. She had previously ordered audio-book devices at a cost of $20 each which only allowed the student to listen to one story, and one story only. Perhaps this investment is something that can be spread and used in the rest of school. Leslie reports that often times there are middle school students who want to read a particular book, but it is out of reach for them according to their reading level. This tool could help them accomplish their goal.
While certainly learning to decode is a fundamental part of reading, once a student has mastered that skill, the brain needs lots of exposure to develop the automaticity that allows students to read fluently at speeds of upwards of 200 words per minute. Having the eyes track the words while hearing the text read aloud can help this important skill. Certainly, Jim Trelease in his “Read Aloud Handbook” shows research that supports hearing stories as well as reading stories adds much to a child’s reading ability.

¡Hola familias de Oyster-Adams!
Muchas gracias por la beca para comprar los jugadores de musica electronica MP3. Hemos utilizado los jugadores para cargar los libros de audio para ayudar a los estudiantes con dificultades desarrollar fluideza. Algunos estudiantes han comenzado a utilizarlos de forma regular. Otros utilizan los jugadores de musica para ayudarles con las tareas de lectura en particular. Asian Heritage Committee / El Comité de la Herencia Asiático

Oyster-Adams Welcomes the Year of the Rabbit!
The Asian Heritage Committee sponsored an assembly on Thursday, February 3rd to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Students and teachers at both campuses kicked off the festivities by wearing red for good luck in the Year of the Rabbit. Lei Zhang (wife of 3B teacher, Mr. Golland) played a magical rendition of “The Dance of the Yi Tribe” on the gu-zheng, a string instrument also known as the Chinese harp. Her performance was followed by a presentation of poetry and songs celebrating the arrival of Spring by 6th and 7th grade Mandarin- language students. Following the assembly at the primary campus, the middle-school students helped Oyster students make a 3-dimensional Chinese character for the word, “Spring.” These characters are placed on doors and windows in Chinese homes to welcome Spring. The assembly was repeated in the afternoon at the intermediate campus.
The Asian Heritage committee is sponsored by the OCC and relies on parent support through the SALSA Parent Campaign to fund its activities. In October, the Committee hosted “Chinese Bedtime Stories,” in celebration of the Autumn Moon Festival, at the primary campus. Students came to the library in their pajamas to listen to principal Liang-Aguirre and Chinese teacher Hanru Li read stories in Chinese, Spanish, and English. Students and parents enjoyed hot cocoa, cookies, and traditional moon cakes after the reading.
The Committee has also purchased a class set of the book, Good Enough, by Paula Yoo, for Mr. Gerber’s 6th grade “Happiness section.” Our next event will be a Japanese paper cutting craft featuring the “Boxy” design of contemporary paper artist Shin Tanaka. Students will photograph their completed designs and send them to Tanaka, who will post them on his website. The event will be held in conjunction with the debut of a new series of Japanese manga purchased for the Laura Dueñes Memorial Library at Adams by the Asian Heritage Committee. Oyster-Adams Celebra el Año del Conejo!
El Comité asiático de Herencia tuvo un asamblea el Jueves, 03 de Febrero para celebrar el Año Lunar Nuevo. Los estudiantes y profesores de ambos planteles comenzaron los festejos con el uso de rojo para la buena suerte en el Año del Conejo. Lei Zhang (esposa del maestro de 3B, Sr. Golland) desempeñó una interpretación mágica de “La danza de la tribu Yi” en la gu-zheng, un instrumento de cuerda también conocido como el arpa China. Su actuación fue seguida por una presentación de poesía y canciones para celebrar la llegada de la primavera por el 6to y 7mo grado en el idioma de Mandarín. Tras la asamblea en el plantel de primaria, los estudiantes de secundaria ayudaron a los estudiantes de Oyster hacer un personaje Chino de 3 dimensiones de la palabra, “Primavera”. En Octubre, el Comité tuvo un programa de “Cuentos Chinos,” para la celebración del Festival de Luna de Otoño, en el plantel primario. Los estudiantes vinieron a la biblioteca en sus pijamas para escuchar a la directora Liang-Aguirre y a maestra de Chino Hanru Li leyeron historias en Chino, Español, y Inglés. Los estudiantes y los padres disfrutaron de chocolate caliente, galletas, y bizcochos tradicionales de luna después de la lectura.
El Comité también ha comprado un conjunto del libro, “Suficiente Bueno“, por Paula Yoo, para la “sección de Felicidad” para 6 º grado de Sr. Gerber. Our third violin class (thanks to OCC funds) now has about 9 kids, which is a great manageable starting number and other kids are starting to notice and ask so I think this will grow next year. The 6th grade would like to thank you for the money you gave us so we could go to Echo Hill. Without it, many of us wouldn’t have been able to go. It is very kind of you to help us out. During the last week in October, the 6th Graders from Oyster-Adams went on their much-anticipated overnight trip to the Echo Hill Outdoors School in Kent County, Maryland. While there, we canoed through swamps, caught and kissed estuarial fish, and hiked by the light of the moon. Everyone returned tired, but excited about the science they had studied. The 6th Grade is thankful to the entire Oyster community for making this annual trip possible. –6th Grade Teachers
OCC was able to help fund the Echo Hill trip for 6th graders through your generous donations to the parent campaign. OCC was able to fund $7,300 towards the trip. Without your contributions, this trip would not have been possible.
Please remember to make your donation to the SALSA Parent Campaign. Make your donation of $50 or more between now and December 15 you will qualify for the drawing of an Apple iPad. The drawing will be held at the Adams Peace Concert.

You will receive a copy of the 2010-2011 Family Directory this week. We distribute one per family through the youngest sibling. If you do not receive your directory, please check with your child’s afternoon teacher for the elementary grades or your child’s homeroom teacher in middle school. For those children from divided families, we made every effort to give those students two copies. If you do not receive a second copy, please leave a note in the school office with your child’s name and class.

Adams’ Recorder Consort/El Consorte de Grabadoras de Adams
The Adams’ Recorder Consort, consisting of 4th graders, is now in full swing, and is at maximum enrollment of 24 students. We have had two full rehearsals and the students have now been given their instruments, learned how to clear and care for them, and have learned five notes. Some students have reported giving small concerts for their visiting grandparents or sick brother. We have 8 sopranos, 8 altos, 4 tenors and 4 bass recorder players. This week students are working on two songs, one written by Beethoven, entitled Ode to Joy, and one written by Mr. Klapper, entitled Monsters Have Feelings Too.

El Consorte de Grabadoras de Adams, que consiste de estudiantes de 4 º grado, ha comensado, y está en matriculación máxima de 24 alumnos. Hemos tenido dos ensayos completos y los estudiantes han recibido sus instrumentos, aprendieron a limpiar y cuidar de ellos, y han aprendido cinco notas. Algunos estudiantes han informado de dar pequeños conciertos cuando visitan sus abuelos o para hermanos enfermos. Tenemos 8 sopranos, 8 altos, 4 tenores y 4 jugadores de registrador bajos. Esta semana los estudiantes están trabajando en dos canciones, una escrita por Beethoven, titulado Oda a la Alegría, y una escrita por el Sr. Klapper, titulado Monstruos Tienen Sentimientos También.
