The Arts @ Oyster-Adams

All students participate in art and music classes. In addition, students can participate in afterschool enrichment classes such as drama, dance, and visual art conducted in Spanish by local professional artists.

OYSTER CAMPUS grades pre-K-3^rd

Art Teacher Fiona Murphy. Fiona Murphy is an Irish artist who has lived and taught in Italy, Brazil and Cuba. She has a degree in fine arts and a higher diploma in interior design and architecture. Fiona worked at the the International School of Havana before moving to the United States in 2008. She first worked at Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington before joining Oyster Adams in 2010. Fiona teaches art through Spanish at Oyster primary campus.

The art teachers at both Oyster and Adams maintain weekly bi-lingual blogs. The blogs are updated weekly so parents can track the curriculum. Students artwork is also maintained on-line at Artsonia.com. The web address and instructions are listed at the end of this page.

Music Teacher Sylvia Zwi, Throughout her 17 years in DC, she has been active as teaching artist with numerous arts organizations Trap Institute including Sitar Arts Center, Choral Arts Society, Wolf Trap Institute and Levine School of Music, where she has also been Music and Art Summer Camp Director for Levine’s Virginia Site. She currently holds a position of music teacher at Oyster-Adams Bilingual School (DCPS – English/Spanish) and provides professional training in both English and Spanish for Fairfax Country Office for Children. Sylvia has a private studio for beginning piano students and is a consultant for arts in education and arts integration.

ADAMS CAMPUS grades 4-8

Art Teacher Yanitza Tavarez. Yanitza Tavarez has taught Art (in Spanish), 4th-8th Grade at Oyster Adams since August 2009. A native New Yorker (with parents from the Dominican Republic), she attended New York’s renowned Pratt Institute (Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theory, Criticism, and History of Art, Architecture and Design; Masters of Industrial Design) and is currently completing a Masters in Secondary Education at George Washington University. Music Teacher Joseph Klapper. In 2009, Mr. Klapper began offering formal music education to the Middle School students. In his classes he tries to stress three elements: music literacy/theory, how to listen to music structurally and culturally rather than superficially, and finally how to perform music to share in the joy of creating. Mr. Klapper is primarily a double bass player. His background is in classical music, though he has played all types of music, ranging from jazz to hip-hop to country western. He has a Masterʼs degree in Double Bass Performance from the Manhattan School of Music in New York City and worked as a principal bassist with Albany Symphony, played for various Broadway musicals, and subbed with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic.
